Dubai
Freelance Visa

Overview

Dubai Freelance Visa is the common search term for a freelance permit or license linked to UAE residence. In practice, an applicant usually needs both parts: legal permission to freelance through a free zone or authority, and a residence visa that allows the person to live in the UAE.

The route is useful for consultants, creatives, educators, software professionals, media workers, and other independent specialists who want a Dubai base without a traditional employer sponsor.

Family Sponsorship and Daily Life

Freelance residence can support normal UAE life, but family sponsorship requires separate checks. Income, housing, insurance, attested marriage certificates, birth certificates, and dependent documents can all matter.

Freelancers should also plan banking and tax compliance. UAE corporate tax can apply to businesses and business activity depending on revenue, structure, and registration position. A freelancer should not assume that a small permit removes all tax or accounting duties.

Charfort can coordinate freelance visa planning with Dubai individual tax support and wider Dubai immigration services.

Freelance Permit vs Residence Visa

The permit and visa are related, but they are not the same.

Item What it does Why it matters
Freelance permit or license Allows the professional activity Needed to invoice and operate legally
Establishment card or authority file Connects the permit to immigration processes Often needed for visa processing
Residence visa Allows the person to live in the UAE Needed for Emirates ID, leasing, banking, and daily life
Emirates ID UAE identity document Needed for most practical services

Popular Dubai Freelance Routes

Dubai offers several routes through free zones and authorities. GoFreelance is one of the best-known options because it is tied to Dubai’s established business communities.

The official GoFreelance information covers activities in sectors such as:

  • Technology through Dubai Internet City.
  • Media through Dubai Media City.
  • Education through Dubai Knowledge Park.
  • Design through Dubai Design District on related community pages.

GoFreelance lists the freelance package fee at AED 7,500 per year and states that this includes the freelancer permit and access to co-working spaces only. Visa, establishment card, medical, Emirates ID, insurance, and other government or service fees may be separate.

Other Dubai free zones may offer different packages and activity lists. The cheapest option is not always the best option. Bank account needs, activity wording, visa support, office access, and renewal rules should be reviewed before choosing.

Green Visa for Freelancers

Some freelancers may qualify for the UAE Green Visa. This is a federal residence route, not the same thing as a free-zone freelance permit.

The UAE Government Green Visa guidance states that freelancers and self-employed people need a freelance or self-employment permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, proof of a bachelor’s degree or specialized diploma, and evidence of annual self-employment income of AED 360,000 for the previous two years or proof of financial solvency during the stay.

The Green Visa can offer a five-year residence route for eligible applicants. However, it has a higher evidence burden than many entry-level freelance permit routes.

Charfort can compare the Green Visa Dubai option with the freelance permit and residence visa route.
